Silver is the new Black - Katrina
Katrina is a beautiful English Rose, she came to me after she decided to stop coloring her hair. It made me so happy she had already decided as her silver hair is gorgeous. She had already dyed her hair blonde for many years, being blonde makes the transition a bit easier as it’s not so much contrast to begin with. This is Katrina`s story.
————————-
I started thinking about stopping colouring my hair when I turned 40. I started dying my hair blonde at age 13, stopped for most of my 20s, then went blonde again in my 30s. I always liked the natural look on other women a lot. Especially on older women, like my mom, with her short snow white hair.
I decided, at 40, that I would go natural with my hair before 50. At 46, I decided that I was ready to go silver. After years of blonde with dark roots, my hair in my 40s was blonde with very pale white roots.
About six to nine months before I stopped colouring, I asked my hairdresser to do foils of blonde, and to leave sections of my natural silver hair between each foil. So I started seeing half silver, half pale blonde. I knew I was ready then. This method also meant there was no straight line of demarcation.
Two years ago, at 46, I stopped colouring my hair. I stopped just as I started a new job, reasoning that my new colleagues wouldn't have memories of me ten years younger with blonde hair. I wore it pulled up in a twist for work, which helped me to not focus on the growing section of hair with no colour. I tried to not think about it.
After six months, it got easier. There was enough silver to see that all would be ok, a year or two down the line. It takes about two years to grow out hair to shoulder length.
I never asked anyone their opinion. I told my husband I was ready to stop colouring and it would help a lot if he said only kind supportive things. He lived up to that, 100%. A few months in, I told my teens that I was going natural, in a very positive way, and they said ok and that was the end of that. I said nothing to friends or colleagues and I don't think people noticed, since there wasn't any line. More recently, I have had only positive comments, never any negative comments. It helps that I love it!
I am now two years in and the silver is about shoulder length. There is still a little faded blonde on the ends. It all blends and looks fine.
I decided that I would have a colour analysis done soon at the same time I decided to stop colouring my hair. I could see that my usual wearing of black might not be my best choice, but I had no idea what colours might suit me, except red, which I thought did suit me. Wearing black in my 40s, I needed more makeup to look good and balance it out. I wanted to be able to wear less makeup. I decided to have a colour analysis one year into going silver, so I could start buying new clothes in better colours that would suit me.
I am fairly minimalist, so my goal is a very small capsule wardrobe in colours that suit me.
I was surprised to find I am a light porcelain summer, but also fully confident that Kari got it right. I am excited to start buying new things and to wear more colour.
