Pantone color of the year 2021 — Colors in Style By Kari

Every year Pantone choose a color for the year, this year the have chosen 2 colors. Ultimate grey and Illuminating. The thought behind the color choices is and I quote Pantone:

“A message of happiness supported by fortitude, the combination of PANTONE 17-5104 Ultimate Gray + PANTONE 13-0647 Illuminating is aspirational and gives us hope. We need to feel that everything is going to get brighter – this is essential to the human spirit.”

Ultimate grey is a cool, medium, silvery grey and Illuminating is a cool yellow not very far from a Lemon yellow. In other words these are cool colors for the Summers and Winters among us.

Im happy that yellow is one of the Pantone colors this year, yellow has not been very much around and many are a bit intimidated by yellow. It`s a very bright and powerful color, you will certainly be seen if you wear yellow. I always tell my clients to start small if they feel yellow is a intimidating color. Use yellow in a pattern or in a camisole under one of your basic colors. Wearing yellow is very flattering for blue eyed people as yellow intensify the eye color. Just make sure you wear the right yellow. More about that below.

So what about us who are in the warm seasons? Can Springs and Autumns wear the Pantone Colors of the year??? No, not in the exact hues Pantone has given us, but for sure we can wear Grey and Yellow. The trick is to pick the right hues for us, and this is where a color analysis will help you tremendously. As an Autumn I dont have a lot of grey in my closet, but I do have a couple of Greyish colors in my color fan. The greys in my fan are grey with a little bit of yellow in them, leaning towards taupe. As per today I only have one grey item in my closet and thats a fauxe suede moto jacket. Actually I never thought of pairing it with yellow, but why not? It`s one of my basic colors and it works with all the other colors in my fan. This year I will be on trend and use it with yellow. I do have a dress in a golden yellow color and the other day I tried out the combination, I actually like it a lot.

I also have another grey/yellow combination in my fan I can use. This would be a nice color combinatrion for the summer as it`s not as autumnal. So this year I will look for a yellow dress or top to pair with my grey moto. I could also look for a bag and/or shoes in my grey colors, these would be a great addition to my wardrobe.

In the pictures above I`m showing greys and yellows from the different generic fans, From left Spring, Summer, Autumn and Winter. As you can see the warm seasons have a variety of yellows, but few greys and vice versa for the cool seasons.

This is the generic colors, if you alredy have a color palette you might have other variations as it`s not one size fits all. Some Winters might have the Icy yellow from the summer palette in their fan for instance.
