White Christmas??

So did we have a White Christmas? Unfortunately not. We got some snow Boxing Day and right now it’s snowing again, but Christmas Eve and Christmas Day it was no sign of the white stuff. One of my Christmas gifts was this sweater dress I got from my man. I absolutely love it, must admit I found it myself, so I was not very surprised when opening the gift. The dress is from Urban Boheme, and goes with many of my scarves, jeans, trousers and boots. A true capsule piece for me.

I promised to tell a bit about Norwegian Christmas traditions, and I’ll keep my promise even if Christmas is over.

DSC_0356

The main difference is that we celebrate Christmas Eve. For us it’s the most important day, it’s when we have our Christmas dinner and when we open the gifts. So how is Norwegian Christmas Eve? Well in the morning and during the day we watch a lot of TV, we watch the same films as we watched last year and 10 -20 years ago. We watch Disney Christmas cavalcade, we watch an old Tcheck film about Cinderella and we are convinced if we don’t watch this film it’s not Christmas.

IMG_2335

And while our Christmas meal is cooking we enjoy our TV traditions while the smell of Christmas is spreading all over the house. For me the smell of Christmas is the smell of Pinnekjøtt. Pinnekjøtt is most common to eat in the west part of Norway, other places tradition can be pork rib or fresh cod. So what is Pinnekjøtt? It’s lambs rib, salted and dried, sometimes also smoked (which is what we prefer). In the evening the 23rd of December we have to put the ribs in water, this is crucial if you forget you have no Christmas dinner. On Christmas Eve we steam cook the ribs for many hours, it’s ready when the meat almost fall off the ribs. It’s served with mashed suede and boiled potatoes. We normally eat this dish a couple of times a year, it’s to yummy to only eat once. It might be we eat it on a Christmas party or also sometimes on New Year’s Eve.

IMG_2334

Dessert is often Rice cream or cream with cloud berries. Other food traditions is to eat rice pudding for lunch Christmas Eve, we put an almond in the pudding and the one who find the almond gets a price, the price is often a marzipan pig. Lefse is also part of Christmas tradition for many Norwegians. It’s made in many different ways, here’s a receipt  in English. Lefse

IMG_2304

After dinner it’s time to open the gifts, our tradition is that we open one at the time. Everyone sees what everyone is getting. It took a couple of hours this year as we were 11 people and a ton of gifts.

IMG_2337

Christmas Day and Boxing Day we normally also spend with family, in Norway all shops are closed both Christmas Day and Boxing Day.

DSC_0358

Now this year is soon has come to an end, it has been a exiting year in many ways. This year gave me two grandchildren, double happiness.

Until next time

Advent the Norwegian way

It’s middle of December and Christmas is coming soon, very soon. I’ve often thought about how  this dark and dreary this month would be like if we didn’t have Christmas to look forward to?  From old ages, long before we knew anything about Christianity there also was a celebration this time of year. It’s the time of year for the solstice and for 3 days our ancestors drank beer and sacrificed a pig to the gods to ensure the coming summer would be good.  So December has always been a festive month in our part of the world, people was busy brewing and preparing food for the big party all of December.

IMG_2305

I think we need this festive season for our sanity really, to prepare for and look forward to something this time of year is essential for us in the cold and darkness. Now that we’re not a bunch of heathens anymore we do like the rest of the Christian world and celebrate the birth of baby Jesus.

IMG_2303

Advent is the beginning of the church year and in every home it’s advent candles. 4 candles, we lit one each Sunday. This year Christmas Eve is a Sunday so we lit the last candle then. We have a little verse we read when we lit each candle. The first candle is for joy, the second for hope, the third for longing and the fourth  for peace. On the fourth Sunday we let all 4 candles burn down, we burn them for joy, for hope, for longing, but most of all for piece on earth. That is what our little verse is about. Traditionally the advent candles were purple, but now we use other colors too. Mine are white or beige, we like them to match our interior you know.

IMG_2295

Something else which is a must have  in advent is the advent star. Every home has at least one star in the window. It’s so important to have the star up by the 1st of December. I think there’s not many homes without a advent star or ten. We have six this year around the house. I remember one year i couldn’t find the advent stars, it was a major crisis.

Other than that we do like most of you do, we bake, cook and clean, and we run around finding Christmas gifts. It can be a very stressful time if you are a perfectionist. Luckily I’m not, and once a very wise woman told me that we’re not celebrating Christmas in the kitchen cabinets, so it really doesn’t matter if you had the time to clean them or not. Tradition says it should be 7 kind of Christmas cakes/cookies, but  I’m not much of a baker. Anyway no one in my family really care about the traditional Christmas cakes, so if I spent a lot of time making cakes they would be what we call in and out cakes. You carry them in, no one eats, then you carry them out again, at last you feed the birds with them. Some years I make a ginger bread house though. Not sure if it will happen this year.

IMG_2309

All photos from our home.

Next time I’ll tell you a little about how we celebrate Christmas.

Until next time

Home knitted in the snow

Finally we had a day with nice weather and the opportunity to have a photo shoot. My friend and photographer Kari had the late shift in her store so before she went to work, we took advantage of the nice weather and the light. We even have snow, which is not very common here. Everybody think Norway has a lot of snow in the winter, and that’s true some places. I live on the west coast where we’re more used to rain in winter than snow. However if we drive an hour or two away from the coast we can find our winter wonderland.

DSC_0301
Hat- homeknitted. scarf – Rosenvinge, sweater – Åsemors kofte, homeknitted, jeans – Fiveunits, boots – Timberland

I took up knitting again this year, and I have knitted a lot, mostly bunnies. I like to knit small things, so I decided to knit myself a new hat or two. This green one I finished late last night to have it ready for this photoshoot. The sweater is also home knitted, but not by me. I had someone knit this for me. In Norway we do love our home knitted sweaters, we have a lot of beautiful traditional patterns. We call these sweaters for kofter. This is not an old traditional kofte, but a quite new pattern made by one of the best knit designers in Norway Sidsel Høivik. Åsemors kofte is the name of this sweater.

DSC_0304

It has a lot of pretty details, and a very unusual color combination and I love it. It’s one of my go to items this winter, and it’s a piece of clothing you have and wear for decades.

DSC_0295

It’s advent, only 12 days left to Christmas and the snow really gets us in Christmas spirit. I’m so happy I bought these Timberland boots, they are so warm and comfortable, and  waterproof. They also have good soles so they handle icy conditions quite well.

DSC_0305

Our house is decorated for Christmas and I almost finished the gifts, now I just need to wrap them. This year we will be 11 for Christmas eve, which is the most important day for us. That’s when we have our traditional Christmas dinner and open the gifts. It’s my first Christmas as a grandmother. Both my little princesses will be about 4 months old at Christmas, can’t wait to see them. Soon…

DSC_0298

I have thought about writing a post about our advent and Christmas traditions and also show how I decorate for Christmas. I hope to get to do it soon.  The past weeks I’ve not been that well, it feels like all energy has left me, but slowly now I feel my energy level is increasing. Cross my fingers.

I wish you all a lovely advent, don’t stress to much, but take the time to enjoy this beautiful time of year.

Until next time

The beauty of a Capsule wardrobe

It’s been a while now since I stumbled upon the concept of capsule wardrobes. It was in April I first read this Blogpost  which changed my opinion about clothes and made my life a bit easier. My wardrobe looked like it had been bombed, I couldn’t find anything and it was a real struggle every day to put together an outfit. All these clothes and nothing to wear. I read this post a Saturday night and really wanted to start right away, but who purges their wardrobes on a Saturday night?? I almost couldn’t sleep all night as I was so excited to start sorting and purging.

Clothes talk

I spent most of he Sunday in the bedroom with all my clothes in a pile on the bed. I couldn’t believe how much it really was. I followed the 5 steps, and I have to say already on the 1st step, you get so much more control. For me choosing a base color was essential, I chose navy and took all the black I wanted to keep and stored it another place. I decided to use navy for spring and summer and use black for autumn and winter. (That’s not exactly what happened, as now black is phasing out of my wardrobe, but that’s another story). What happened was that I fell in love with my clothes all over again, I realised I had a lot of good clothes, and suddenly I was able to see them, and put together outfits with them.

09e47-dsc_0310

After this lifechanging Sunday in April I’ve actually had a quite simple life when it comes to get dressed. I know where everything is, everything goes together more or less, and when I buy something new I always make sure it will go with at least five other items in my wardrobe. Ofcourse I’ve done a couple of bad choices too, but all and all I’m happy with what I’ve bought. Like this striped dress which seemed to pair nicely up with almost everything.

I’ve had a couple of purges after this Sunday in April, it’s a  work in progress really. And every time I’ve purged it’s been easier to let go of clothes that I’ve kept just in case or for sentimental reasons. I will also give the advice, don’t purge the winter clothes in summer or vice versa. It might be you throw out something you really need. If you have a winter coat you’re not that happy with, wait until winter and until you found the perfect coat before you let it go. If not you might end up buying another coat you’re not that happy with just because it’s cold and you really need a coat to stay warm.

DSC_0257

This has all been so inspiring and I’ve also learned I could be an inspiration to others, who would have thought?  When starting up this blog I never intended to be a model myself, I used a mannequin to photograph my clothes until one day my friend Kari told me I should be a model myself and offered to take the photos. We’ve had a couple of photos shoots and a lot of fun, to my surprise I’m not half bad as a model.

79b22-dsc_0387

I’ve been playing around with my clothes, tried out combinations I really didn’t think would work, some of them has ended up on the list of favorite combinations. I’ve learned always to take photos of the outfits, for some reason it’s much easier to judge from a photo if something works or not. So this is another advice to you, try on different combos, take photos, dare to be silly in front of the camera, pretend you’re a model on a photo shoot. Remember all photos can be deleted and no one needs to see them, and maybe some of them turns out real good. Here’s a Selfies for dummies crash course.

So if you have loads and loads of clothes in your wardrobe, but nothing to wear, consider a capsule wardrobe. It doesn’t have to be a set number of clothes, if you have 100 pieces or more you’d like to keep, keep them, but sort them into seasons and colors. That way yo will get a much easier life when it comes to get dressed in the morning. Challenge yourself, do a 30×30 challenge, that means for 30 days you only wear 30 pieces of clothing. Or even more advanced a 10×10 which is, well I guess you’ve got the picture.

Until next time

One dress – Four seasons- Winter 2

Link ups:Classy yet trend

Again a post about the most versatile dress I’ve ever had. It’s actually on the list of my 25 most used items in the Stylebook app. That’s really not bad for a dress.

Ennå en gang et antrekk med den mest anvendelige kjolen jeg noen gang har hatt. Faktisk ligger den blant de 25 mest brukte plaggene mine i Stylebook appen, og det er jammen ikke verst for en kjole.

DSC_0285

This time I’ve paired it with an oversized, cream cardigan from the Norwegian brand Holzweiler, the scarf is also from Holzweiler. I also wear the leather coated jeans from Fiveunits, Timberland boots and bag is from Mulberry. Everything a few years old.

Her er den sammen med en cardigan og et sjal fra det Norske merket Holzweiler. Bukse fra Fiveunits, mine trofaste Timberland støvletter og veske fra Mulberry.l Alt er noen år gammelt.

DSC_0277The watch is from  Mockberg. Klokke fra Mockberg.

DSC_0274

Bildene ble tatt i juli, det var da vi fotograferte denne kjolen for alle årstider.DSC_0283Photos from July, when we photographed this dress for all seasons.

You can find the dress in these posts:

One dress- Four seasons – Preparing for winter

One dress four seasons – Autumn 2

One dress, four season – Autumn 1

One dress, four seasons – Summer

One dress,four seasons – Spring outfit 2

One dress, four seasons – Spring outfit 1

We’re still waiting for an opportunity to do another photoshoot, it’s not exactly easy this time of year. I dream of a photoshoot in the snow, that would be amazing, not that we normally have much snow…

Until next time

Dressing the truth

I have to admit I’m a sucker for blazers and dresses and when I worked in an office I wore this a lot. I have a couple of good blazers from back then and also managed to buy two more this year. Ok one of them was a real bargain as it was from the test collection and sold for only a fraction of the price. (NOK 300 normal price about NOK 2000)

DSC_0468

But it’s time to be realistic, I don’t work at the office no more, my health issues put a stop to that a couple of years ago. (I still hope and believe I can work again if only my head stops spinning for every little thing I do.  There’s always hope.) What I need now is practical, comfy clothes to wear around the house, clothes I can relax in, take a walk in and run some errands in without looking like I dressed in the dark. I really don’t wear blazers at home and I have to face it, I’m at home 90% of the time and this is how I really dress.

This slideshow requires JavaScript.

So it was time to face the truth, I started by dividing my clothes into 2 categories my Cozy homey clothes and the clothes I wear when I’m going somewhere. Some are for both categories. Leanne from Classy yet trendy for sure was no fool when she started to sell e-books in several categories. I’ve learned so much from her, but since I live in a much colder climate and also in Scandinavia where we have different fashion I have to be creative with what we’ve got here.

So far I’ve only categorized them in my Stylebook app, this is an app for IOS, there are also other closet apps Smart closet is one and GlamOutfit one. So here’s my Cosy homy capsule for this winter.

IMG_2215

And here’s some outfits from my cosy home capsule.

IMG_2213

And here’s the rest of  my winter capsule, I could probably do with half of this, but this is clothes I like and use when going somewhere.

IMG_2216IMG_2214

The last thing i bought before I started my shopping fast was a orange skirt, I’m still waiting for it so don’t know if it will stay, I’ve become an expert in sending things back. Anyway I played around with it and made some outfits.

I think that separating like this will make it even easier to get more wear of my clothes. It has also proved that I do have enough of clothes in both categories so no need to panic even if I’m having a fast. The options are many, I don’t need to put on the same everyday or feel I’m badly dressed when at home.

Until next time

Kari

Autumn leaves

This autumn has so far been so been so wet, it has constantly been pouring down more or less all October. In between we’ve had a couple of sunny days, but so few we can count them on one hand really. When I look back at the clothes I’ve used the raincoat and the waterproof boots are the most used items. I’ve been longing to use the rust coat I bought in London in September, but so far it’s only been in use 4-5 times. At least I have some pics of it from our last photoshoot. This was October 1st and it was the kind of autumn weather we really long for. The days when sun is shining and the autumn leaves explodes in all the autumn colors that we love so much.

Can we hope for a better November??? So far it’s not exactly improved a lot, or at all.

DSC_0413

The other day we had a hint of the kind of autumn we want, you know a day when you actually can smell the autumn, the crisp, cold air. I think it’s one of my favourite smells.

What’s really difficult in the autumn/winter is to get to do a photo shoot. We have to do it in the weekend and it has to be nice weather. Ha ha like that’s going to happen any time soon, but we can cross our fingers. Maybe next weekend??

I’m currently preparing my winter capsule, It won’t be that many changes from the autumn capsule, I’ve removed some items and added some. I’m going to show you in my next post what I’ve planned for the winter.

Shirt – Fransa, jeans – Fiveunits, vest – Life Time (Sparkjøp), scarf – Holzweiler, boots – Timberland

I have bought a pair of winter boots, a merino wool shirt and this fake fur vest for the winter capsule, but that’s all I’m going to buy. In fact I have decided to not buy anything new before next year. Ok now it’s official so I really can’t go back on it.

30×30 challenge-Days 21-30 – Review

Since I mostly lived life in slow motion, my outfits haven’t been very exiting the past 10 days. I had a dentist appointment and also have been to my dermatologist,  that’s about it. My days have been spent knitting, reading and a couple of walks in the rain. I also dyed some clothes, I will show them in another post. Here’s 2 of my outfits the past 10 days. The ones worth mentioning.

My 30×30 challenge ended yesterday, so how did I do? What did I love, what couldn’t I live without and what did I not like that much?

The list of my 30 items changed a bit during the month, I took out some items before I used them and replaced them with better options. I thought I used a couple of extras, but when the end of the month came I actually worn exactly 30 items, not included accessories.

Here’s my original list:

And this is what I ended up with:

I replaced the yellow dress because when I finally received it, it turned out to be the ugliest dress ever. It was replaced by a navy dress with white stripes from Jean Paul.

Quite soon I also took the cream sweater from the 30, it wasn’t warm enough for this October so I replaced it with a rust cardigan.

For some reason I never wore the faux suede waterfall cardigan, so I replaced it with a quilted jacket which I needed when I was in Oslo a couple of days. I didn’t have room for the rust coat in my carry on and needed a lighter option.

Due to wet and cold weather I never got to wear the cognac shoes or the suede boots, those were replaced by rain boots and my waterproof utility jacket.

This is what I couldn’t have lived without:

1. The raincoat from BRGN

2. I soon missed my Timberland waterproof utility jacket as this is a bit more casual than the raincoat.

3. Timberland waterproof boots

4. Ilse Jacobsen rain boots, can’t wear same boots every day so needed 2 waterproof options.

5. Leather coated jeans, very practical when it’s pouring down.

6 and 7 My cozy pants from Global funk and 2nd one, seriously I could have lived in those pants.

8. My versatile dress from Moves by Minimum. It’s so practical to wear a dress when it’s raining. You can read why Here

My favorites:

1. Rust cardigan from Zavanna

2. Navy cardigan from Lindex, navy sweater from Oxmo and mustard jeans from Floyd.

3. Rust coat from Zara, I didn’t get to wear it much due to the weather.

4. Homeknitted (not by me) Fanakofte

5. Mustard sweater from Masai and kosebukse from Global funk.

6.  Soft blazer from Penn&Ink and dark blue jeans from Fiveunits.

Not so much.

1. Sweater from Lindex, I would have loved it if it was a cardigan, the neckline is wrong for me. Note to self, look for cardigans and V-neck. Don’t ever buy crew neck sweaters and tees again.

2. Olive tee, don’t particularly like the print, makes it less versatile.

3. Off white shirt from Dranella, it’s a bit to white for my complexion and I don’t like the arms on it. Needs to be replaced with a more cream colored one. No rush though.

4. Charcoal Cardigan from H&M, a bit to chunky and not very good quality. Will eventually be replaced with a long cardigan of better quality and possibly also another color. No rush though.

5. Navy and white striped dress from Jean Paul. Actually I like everything but the stripes. I feel all I can see is the stripes. I can try to soften the stripes by putting the dress in tea, then stripes will be more off white or even taupe, I can dye it with blue dye.

So this was my summary of the 30×30 challenge, would I do it again? Definitely, I guess I’m almost doing it already more or less. I think next time I’ll leave out the outerwear and shoes, as our weather is to unpredictable to decide shoes and outerwear for a month. I managed this time due to the pouring rain most of the time.

One dress- Four seasons – Preparing for winter

Winter is maybe right around the corner, even if we normally don’t have that cold winters here it’s still good to be prepared. So what I’ve done, I’ve been going through my closet and found that I really don’t need much. I have warm sweaters and cardigans which fits and I actually like, I have merino wool longs and long sleeved undershirt if I should need it. Most of my autumn clothes is also suitable for winter. It’s really a good idea to take a look at what you have before going shopping, I don’t know about you, but I have more than one time bought an almost exact copy of something I already had in my closet and forgot about.

DSC_0296

I have a little discussion with myself if I should pack away my mustard items or not. On one side I don’t want to, on the other side, I’m afraid I will be fed up with them and if I pack them away now I will love them next autumn. I have also found how to wear my favourite dress in winter. Actually this was done long time ago, back when I still had hair.

DSC_0297

Of course if it’s real cold I would have to add a coat, and if it’s cold and rain my new raincoat would be the option.

DSC_0295

We don’t have to pull out the sunglasses very often in the winter, but it happens.

When going through my stuff I found what I really needed was a pair of warm and waterproof boots. I bought a pair of Timberland Premium Shearling. They will keep me both warm and dry. I have another pair of Timbelands, and I love them so I hope I will love these as much.

Playing around with an old dress

I have this very cozy and comfy dress from Chill of Norway, it must be about 10 years old and I haven’t used it for years. It has survived all my purges, some items do for some reason. Now I wanted to see if I could use it again. I like the color of it, maybe it’s why it survived.

IMG_2138

Ok here’s the dress….

IMG_2148

Add a scarf, better already.

IMG_2136

Add my new rust cardigan. Yes I could wear this, if I only could find a pair of thighs to go with this. I think finding the right tights are a big problem. I would like some which has the same color as my boots.

IMG_2142

Now trying a navy fitted cardigan, this works too. Brown and blue looks good together. Think I need to loosen it a little though.

IMG_2135

The navy cardigan also works.

IMG_2141

Now the denim shirt dress, well not that bad, not really good either.

IMG_2137

Let’s try the olive lightweight coat. Not half bad really, this  could work.

IMG_2140

How about my Fanakofte??? Oh dear, a big NO.

IMG_2146

And my mustard favorite sweater??? Nah, it’s relaxed though.

IMG_2147

Ok now let’s put on black tights and boots and see if the black leather jacket could work. Oh no, not so much. I guess this jacket will be in the sell pile soon.

IMG_2144

So so what about the striped long cardigan from Masai? Oh no!!  I ithink this will be in the sell pile too. It will probably look much better on someone else.

IMG_2145

What about the charcoal bolero? Not that bad, but…

IMG_2139

Let me try the long charcoal cardigan. Oh dear, who’s that frumpy old lady?

Well I had fun, and at least I found a couple of outfits I can use. I also got a look at some of the clothes I have stored in my out of season closet. I think a lot has to go.

Would you keep this dress?

Until next time
